A month after the Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set Chaos Vault sale saw disaster in the form of a paused queue and vanishing stock, Wizards of the Coast shared what went wrong, along with news of a second chance for everyone who walked away empty-handed.

In an update posted Thursday (Oct. 1), Matthew Hodgins of the Secret Lair team explained what caused the queue issues during the Sept. 1 sale, apologized for a decision he made mid-sale, and announced that The Zeta Set will go on sale again on Dec. 9 in a 24-hour window in which every order placed will be fulfilled.

The Zeta Set, a collaboration with art collective MSCHF revealed Aug. 25, is the first set-sized release through the Secret Lair program: 121 in-set cards plus 17 bonus cards, sold in randomized seven-card packs at $19.92 each.

The Sept. 1 sale began at noon EDT and stalled within the hour, and by the time the queue resumed shortly after 2 p.m., many buyers found the set had sold out. Wizards called the sale "a disaster" in a statement that evening.

What Went Wrong?

According to Hodgins, an investigation led by Secret Lair's processing partner found the sale's problems weren't just a case of demand being greater than the number of packs printed. Early in the sale, he said, the launch was hit by what Wizards describes as an "external service disruption." They worked to restore stability, but the disruption affected the sale from that point on.

Wizards' initial statement left the door open to either an internal or external systems issues being the culprit. The update on Oct. 1 attributes the trouble to an outside service disruption, but does not say what that service was or what caused it to fail.

The set sold out regardless, which Hodgins acknowledged should not be mistaken for a success. "I know how that looks from the outside: sell-out usually reads as a win. It wasn't. A sale isn't a success just because inventory hits zero." He described what many buyers experienced: "a queue that wasn't moving, refreshing your inbox waiting on a confirmation email that never came. Some of you weren't sure for hours whether you'd bought anything at all."

Hodgins singled out one decision as his own: pausing the queue while the backend systems were strained. He defended the pause itself as the right technical call, since sending buyers through to a checkout that couldn't process their orders would have made things worse. At the time, inventory was still reporting enough stock to fill a significant number of the waiting orders.

It didn't. "As we finished processing, the backlog was much larger than expected and inventory quickly normalized to show we were much closer to selling out than initially estimated," said Hodgins. "The result was thousands of you sat in a waiting room for roughly an extra hour and a half, with no real information, and only a select few were able to get the last remnants of stock as we brought the sale back online."

Hodgins apologized directly to those buyers, and added that the disruption shouldn't serve as cover for other issues with the release that Wizards says it is addressing for the long term.

Order Confirmations and Shipping

Anyone who placed an order should now have a confirmation email; Wizards attributes the multi-day delay to a backlog of orders that required manual review. Buyers who believe they completed a purchase but haven't received confirmation are directed to Secret Lair Customer Support.

Orders from the original sale are estimated to begin shipping Nov. 5 from the North America store, and Dec. 8 in Europe and the United Kingdom.

The Zeta Set Returns Dec. 9

Canceled and failed orders returned some stock to Wizards, but Hodgins wrote that demand outstrips that supply by a wide margin, and that putting it up for sale would only produce another queue with the same outcome for most people. Instead, in Hodgins' words, "We're running it back."

On Dec. 9, The Zeta Set will be available again in a single 24-hour order window, and every order placed during that window will be fulfilled. Orders from the second sale are estimated to begin shipping in the second half of 2027, with more detail on timing to come closer to the sale.

It's assumed that prices will remain the original $19.92 pack price, or that the 12-pack purchase limit will carry over to the December sale.

Any purchase made during the original sale has not been fulfilled, and most orders haven't even been charged yet. Hodgins acknowledges that allowing for more purchases of Zeta might change the minds of original purchasers. "If this change means Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set isn't what you signed up for anymore, I understand completely, and you should feel no obligation to keep it," said Hodgins. This includes the sellers who listed presale packs on eBay for $80 to $150 apiece in the hours after the original sale.

Buyers who no longer want their order can submit a cancellation ticket by Oct. 9, no explanation required. Those who keep their orders don't need to do anything, and will be among the first to receive the set.

Zeta Set Sale Returns Dec. 9 With 24-Hour Order Window

In the words of an official announcement from Wizards of the Coast, Tuesday (Sept. 2)'s Chaos Vault sale of The Zeta Set was "a disaster."

Prospective purchasers of the Secret Lair exclusive set were met with difficulty when attempting to digitally queue up to snag a pack of the 121-card set. While the sale began at noon EDT, trouble began soon after; purchasers were halted with messages less than an hour later informing them that the sale had been delayed "due to technical issues." They were instructed to stay on the page, and in the queue, to reserve their spot.

When another message was presented shortly after 2 p.m. EDT, purchasers read that the sale would be "moving forward normally."

Once the queue resumed, many found the set had sold out. According to a statement on the Wizards website released late Tuesday, "We are in the process of investigating exactly what went so very wrong and will share more as soon as we're able to untangle the mess and understand the root cause — be it an internal systems issue or external tampering."

In the statement the Secret Lair team thanked purchasers who were able to complete their orders, while those who believe they completed a purchase have been told to have patience while the issues were investigated. They also recommend buyers reach out to the Secret Lair Customer Support team, a service as of this writing currently experiencing delays due to an increased volume of tickets.

The statement continued, stating that "we're continuing to investigate what happened today and it may take a little while to fully get our heads around it. For everyone who participated in what can only be described as a frustrating and disappointing experience, whether you made it through the queue or not, we are going to try and make this right."

The Secret Lair Zeta collaboration with art collective MSCHF has drawn plenty of discourse since its reveal to the public on August 25, only one week prior to the sale. While the cards, styling, and art direction have stirred contemplative discussion on Magic-focused social media, the concept of randomized seven-card packs sold for $19.92 each has divided Magic fans. Each pack contains three commons, two uncommons, one wildcard of any rarity, and one rare/mythic rare.

As we covered last week, MSCHF is known for projects that turn familiar cultural readymades into something entirely new, whether through fashion, art, technology, or consumer products. For Zeta, MSCHF has designed 138 cards (121 official in-set cards, and 17 still-unknown bonus cards), making this the first set-scale collaboration through Magic's Secret Lair program.

As stated by the Secret Lair team, some purchases were completed. As of Tuesday evening, there are several listings on eBay for single packs going for upwards of $80-150, each claiming to have "presale confirmed," though that claim has not been verified. One listing, set at $999.99 or best offer, is for a 12-pack set, the maximum number of packs one customer could order as per Secret Lair purchase limit.

The statement Tuesday evening concluded by saying that "once we have a better sense of orders that actually got through, failed orders that we can track, and everything in between, we'll come back and share as much as we can."

Were you in Tuesday's queue? Were you able to get a confirmation of your purchase? How do you think Secret Lair's intent to "make it right" will take shape? Sound off below.
